The DogFather – A Pet Hostel

Are Indie Dogs Good for Homes?

One of the most common questions we receive at The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel is “Can Indie dogs be a good option for home?”

And our answer is always—Yes, absolutely. But only if you truly understand them.

First understand Indie Dog’s personality

Indie dogs, also known as “Desi Dogs”, are not just “strays” — they are one of the most intelligent, resilient, and naturally evolved dog breeds in India. They are born and raised in real-world conditions.

They learn:
• How to find food
• How to protect themselves
• How to read danger
• How to trust carefully

This survival instinct becomes their core personality.

What Happens When an Indie Dog Comes Home?

When you bring an Indie dog into your home, you are not just adopting a pet — you are changing their entire world. At The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel, we have seen this transformation countless times.

Initially, an Indie dog may:
• Be cautious or fearful
• Take time to trust
• Observe more than react
• Stay alert in new environments

But once they feel safe, they become the most loyal companions you will ever have.

What Most People Don’t Understand

This is where most mistakes happen. People expect Indie dogs to behave like:
• Golden Retrievers
• Labrador
• Shih Tzus

But they forget —Indies are not trained for comfort, they are trained for survival.

Are Indie Dogs Good for First-Time Pet Parents?

Yes — but with the right mindset.

If you are:
✔ Patient
✔ Emotionally understanding
✔ Ready to invest time to train them

Then an Indie dog is one of the best choices you can make.

But if you want:
❌ Instant obedience
❌ Show-off breed
❌ Low emotional involvement

Then you may struggle.

We recently adopted an Indie after already having a Beagle, and we named her ‘Heer.’ Like any new family member, her journey of adjusting to home and living with her elder sibling has come with its own set of challenges. Every day, we are working patiently on her training so she can feel comfortable, secure, and truly at home. It takes a lot of patience, consistent efforts, professional guidance, and repeating commands multiple times to help her learn and adapt. Some days are easier, some are tougher — but every small progress feels like a big win.

Our Experience at The Dogfather Hostel

At The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel & Shelter, our journey started with rescues. From feeding one hungry dog to caring for over 150+ dogs every day, we have seen Indies in their rawest and most beautiful forms.

We have seen:
• Fear turn into trust
• Survival turn into love
• Loneliness turn into belonging

👉 No dog loves more purely than an Indie who has finally found a home.

Meet a few of our beautiful Indie babies, raised with love by their parents and welcomed with open hearts at our hostel. Every time they walk through our gates, they don’t just check in — they fill the entire space with joy, warmth, and pure love.
