Being an animal lover—especially a dog lover—is something deeply emotional. There is a different kind of energy, a silent connection, and an unspoken empathy we feel for them. When we see a dog suffering on the road—injured, hungry, or scared—it doesn’t just hurt our eyes, it hits our heart. And in that moment, we don’t think—we act. But rescue is not just about picking a dog and bringing them home. It is a responsibility, a commitment, and a journey of healing—for them and for you.
At The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel (Mohali, Punjab), we believe that every dog deserves love, safety, and dignity—whether they are a pedigree or an indie.
This guide will help you understand how to rescue a stray dog in India, step by step—from the road to recovery and beyond.
Step 1: Before You Pick Them Up
- Dogs can sense your energy. A calm approach builds trust.
- Check for visible injuries, bleeding, fractures, or aggression due to pain.
- A cloth, towel, or even a box to safely handle them.
- A scared or injured dog may bite out of fear, not aggression.
Remember: You are entering their moment of pain. Be gentle.
Step 2: Immediate Care & First Response
Immediate care can save lives:
- Take the dog to a nearby vet immediately
- Control bleeding using clean cloth/gauze
- Offer clean drinking water
- Avoid giving random medicines without vet advice
Step 3: Fostering a Rescued Dog at Home
If you can foster—even temporarily—you can completely change their life.
- Provide a quiet, safe space
- Keep clean bedding and warmth
- Feed nutritious home-cooked food (as per vet)
- Maintain hygiene and wound care
- Be patient—trust takes time
Step 4: Dog Adoption in India (If You Can’t Keep Them)
Not everyone can keep a rescued dog—and that’s okay.
- Try to find a responsible and loving adopter
- Verify their background and intent
- Ensure vaccination and basic treatment
- Educate them about the dog’s needs
Step 5: Follow-Up After Adoption
Rescue doesn’t end at adoption.
- Stay connected with the adopter
- Ask for regular updates
- Ensure the dog is safe and loved
Because once you rescue them, they become a part of your life forever.
Our Belief
At The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel, this is not just something we write—it’s something we live every day.
Every rescue, every meal, every shelter we provide to street dogs is a reminder that they don’t need luxury—they need love, safety, and dignity.
Dogs don’t understand luxury brands.
They don’t understand money.
They only understand one thing—love.

This is Capsicum who came to The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel for just 12 days… but in those 12 days, he left a story we’ll never forget. He was found injured, hit and left on the road. But somewhere in this world, kindness still exists. A beautiful soul didn’t just walk past him — they stopped, picked him up, got him treated, and stayed by his side. When they couldn’t keep him due to space, they trusted us to foster him.
And Capsicum… despite everything he went through… was nothing but love. Calm, gentle, and trusting — as if he chose to believe in humans again. After his recovery, he went back with the same people who rescued him — completing a full circle of compassion.
At The Dogfather, we witness stories like this almost every day. And each time, it reminds us of one simple truth:
There are people who hit and run…
and there are people who stop, stay, and save. ❤️
