7 Essential Tips for Pet Parents
Firecrackers, loud noises, smoke, and bright flashes can cause extreme stress, anxiety, and respiratory discomfort in pets. Here are 7 practical ways to keep your pet safe this Diwali.
1. Create a Safe Space: Keep your pets indoors in a quiet, familiar room with comfortable bedding and their favourite toys.
2. Reduce Noise Exposure: Close windows, draw curtains, and play soft music or white noise to help mask the sound of crackers.
3. Protect Against Smoke: Keep doors and windows closed during heavy fireworks. Use an air purifier if available, and avoid exposing pets to smoke and fumes.
4. Walk Before Sunset: Complete outdoor walks and toilet breaks before fireworks begin. Always use a secure leash and harness. Frightened pets may panic and escape unexpectedly.
5. Never Leave Pets Outdoors: Balconies, terraces, gardens, and open yards are unsafe during fireworks, even for pets accustomed to outdoor living.
6. Avoid Festive Hazards: Keep diyas, candles, electrical decorations, sweets, chocolates, and firecracker debris out of your pet’s reach.
7. Watch for Distress: Excessive panting, trembling, drooling, hiding, or breathing difficulties may indicate serious distress. Consult your veterinarian about severe anxiety beforehand, and seek urgent veterinary care for breathing problems. Never give human sedatives.
A Gentle Reminder from The Dogfather – A Pet Hostel
Diwali is a celebration for us, but it can be a frightening experience for animals. While our pets have the comfort of safe homes, countless street animals have nowhere to hide from the terrifying sounds of firecrackers and the suffocating smoke. This Diwali, let compassion be your brightest light—offer them a safe corner, a bowl of water, and the kindness they cannot ask for in words.
A festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil should never become a night of fear and suffering for the most voiceless among us.
